On 19 – 20th May, 2005 a training course on sweetpotato production and management for Bulabakulu community was organized by CIP and NARO in collaboration with AGLM. This was the first phase of training of farmers in Bulabakulu village whose major objective was to equip farmers with practical knowledge and skills in sweetpotato production and management so that they could become self sufficient in as far as food availability is concerned. This was done partly to enable the widows and orphans of Bulabakulu village to provide for themselves food on a sustainable basis through sweetpotato production.
The training, which attracted a total of 43 participants from within Bulabakulu and the surrounding villages covered a range of topics such as: site selection and land preparation, vine selection, multiplication and conservation of planting materials (RMT), planting, weeding and hilling up, pests and disease identification and management, harvesting and farming as a business.
